Speedpedelecs are wildly popular these days. And rightly so, it is the perfect reason to trade in the car for a bicycle and still travel long distances. Are you considering buying a speedpedelec yourself? Then read on!
What is a speed pedelec?
A speed pedelec is an electric bike that provides assistance up to 45km/h, compared to a "standard" electric bike that goes up to 25km/h. The motor usually has an output of 4Kw. This speed makes a commuting distance of 50km suddenly doable by bicycle.
Useful tips when buying a speed pedelec
The high speed of a speed pedelec is very convenient, but it also comes with some responsibilities. Be sure to follow these tips before jumping on a speed pedelec:
Tip 1: Wear a helmet
A bicycle helmet is mandatory for those cycling with a speed pedelec, and it must be approved according to the EN1078 - quality label. In human terms, this means that the temples and the back of the head must be protected. Check out our offer here.
Tip 2: Respect traffic rules
Not everyone is aware of the speed of a speed pedelec. Therefore, be sure to follow the traffic rules to avoid dangerous situations.
Tip 3: Make sure you are highly visible
You speed by on your speed pedelec at lightning speed. Therefore, make sure you are sufficiently visible in traffic:
- dress conspicuously;
- make sure your bicycle lights work;
- Put a cool horn or bell on your handlebars.
Tip 4: Check your insurance
There is no legally required civil liability insurance for the speed pedelec when it does not have an autonomous motor. Nevertheless, it is not a bad idea to check your family insurance policy for coverage for accidents involving speedpedelecs.

What are the obligations?
What do you need to get right before you can take a speed pedelec on the road?
- License plate: it is mandatory to register the bicycle with the Vehicle Registration Department (DIV), just like cars. Therefore, electric bicycles will have a small license plate of about 10 by 12 cm.

- Driving license: For a speed pedelec, a driver's license AM (moped) is the minimum. A driving license B is, of course, also fine.
