There are 24 hours in a day, of which, in an ideal world, we already spend about eight while sleeping. For all those who prefer not to spend the remaining hours in traffic, there is a healthy alternative: the bicycle.
Belgium, land of french fries traffic jams
The corona crisis brought us many negative consequences, but here and there that global downtime also had a positive impact. Many companies discovered that it is actually perfectly possible to work from home often. Employers and employees strongly questioned the way we get around. Standing in traffic jams for hours every day suddenly seemed completely outdated and counterproductive.
Today, unfortunately, history seems to be repeating itself anyway, because almost nowhere is traffic congestion such a phenomenon as in Belgium. We lose up to two hours a day by standing still. Moreover, the car is king of transportation, because for almost two out of three commutes, the car remains the main means of transportation.

In the 5th episode of our podcast "Kilowatt hours," we take a closer look at current mobility challenges in Belgium.
Faster than you think
The solution to the congestion problem? Multimobility involving a smart combination of walking, cycling, public transportation and shared cars. We need to start using the car more when we really have to, and not because we can.
Moreover, people still too often underestimate the speed of two wheels. The average Belgian's commuting distance is about 20 kilometers. Nowadays, you can easily cover distances of more than 30 kilometers by (electric) bicycle. Not all journeys can be covered without a car, but we can certainly be ambitious.
In addition, in urban areas, bicycles are often faster than cars. Cities such as Ghent promote sustainable mobility and increasingly choose car-free zones with an adapted mobility plan. So with a bicycle, you don't have to make a detour and you often get to your destination faster. This not only saves time, but also reduces stress.
